For the longest time, I considered myself a dog person—no exceptions. I avoided cats entirely, convinced they weren’t for me, and even told myself I was allergic. That belief held strong until I joined an organization dedicated to finding homes for stray animals. In my parents’ neighborhood in Guam, cats were everywhere. While we successfully rehomed most of them, one kitten proved especially difficult to place. Because of the superstition that black cats bring bad luck, few people were interested in Kula.
Spending time with Kula slowly changed everything. I began to notice how charming cats could be—their attitudes, their independence, and their quirky personalities. Before I knew it, I had completely fallen for her, and adopting Kula felt like the most natural decision in the world.
Kula is now turning five years old, and I can’t imagine my life without this affectionate little furball. She taught me that labels aren’t always accurate—and that it’s entirely possible to love both. So, to answer the prompt, my favorite would have to be both dogs and cats. I simply couldn’t choose just one.
